Our two hearts will always push and pull against each other.

I am the tide,

you are my moon, and just in case you ever want to reel me back in again, please know, I will be lounging amongst sand and surf, just waiting for you …

for eternity.

-Samuel Decker Thompson

Who are you waiting for? Do you think they are waiting for you? What is keeping you apart? Tell me your story.

For some reason it never occurred to me that such a word as pronoia might exist, but it describes how I have always felt about my life.

Yesterday I was having a conversation with my daughter and explained to her why I simply don’t stress or get worried when something that appears to be bad has happened in my life, and it is because, for whatever reason, I have always felt that things tend to work out as they are meant to, and often the “bad things” that happen to us are opening a door that actually leads us to better experiences, and hopefully even sends us on a path towards better people that will ultimately enrich our lives.

It is also interesting to me that if you think about something or someone in your current life that you are really happy about, or truly value, you can generally trace that current source of happiness back to something bad that happened in the past, and typically you’ll realize that if that bad thing had never happened, you would never have been in the right place, at the right time you needed to be in order to receive the good things that you currently value most.

The trick is to be able to accept this process in the moment when seemingly negative things are happening.

It is all part of your path.

People always say “what a waste” when someone dies young, or “such a shame”, but is it really?

A couple generations down the road we will all just be a picture on a wall that family passes by without even a glance, or more likely, we’ll just be a picture on a defunct website that nobody looks at.

None of this will change based on how much time we spend here. At least if we go young we can ensure an ageless portrait and recollections from others that only include our youthful visage.

Even for those who achieve some great level of success, notoriety, or maybe even have some invention that changes mankind…does it really matter? Does the public give two shits about the person themself? We are not our creations, they are merely a product of us. For future generations that product might as well have been created by a machine. Through the lens of history It is connected to the human being in name only. A name in a textbook has nothing to do with the human who once was.

What difference does legacy matter?

That “dash” on a tombstone? Eventually, we will be dust in the wind, no longer capable of caring how we are remembered. So, why do people spend so much of their lives trying to protect and build their legacy when it is ultimately meaningless? Why work so hard. Why try so hard to be “good” or responsible?

Consequences be damned, just do what you wish, do what makes you happy in the moment. We all face exactly the same consequences eventually. Death and Irrelevance.

Life just … is,

until it isn’t, and then just a few generations down the road, even the memory of that life lived will cease to exist.

The point is, stop living your life based on a vision of what you want to leave behind.

In the grand scheme of things legacy will not matter.

Instead, live your life with a focus on what you can do now.

Who can you show love to today?

Whose life can you enrich today?

What can you do to make yourself happy today?

In the end, if you still believe in legacy, both the way you seized the day and the way you loved will be the worthwhile sentiments that endure.

The crisp carnage of Autumn will soon crunch underfoot; imagine them to be your many burdens, the spines of your enemies, and the hearts of those who once broke yours.

See all of that spread out beneath you, stomp through these lifeless leaves without mercy, then step aside and watch as the winds of change render it all meaningless.
